damn i hate the staff can't enter rules. ;)
I'll have to answer this in two parts.
1)If I was to choose something that would go well with the dark and stormy night as a "soundtrack": I'd bring AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS by H.P. Lovecraft. -Would probably scare me to death though.
2)To get my mind off of the fact that it's a dark and stormy night, I'd bring GOING POSTAL by Terry Pratchett. -I've worked in the Norwegian Mail, so I think this book just about gets what it's like. and it really makes me laugh.
Ole, great answers! I know what you mean, on a dark stormy night if I was alone i'd go for cheery and silly too.

Oooh these sound so good :) hehehe Ole A. Imsen, I am an H.P. Lovecraft fan also (the Mountains of Madness is long, but one of his best. The Dunwich Horror is tops, too.)
ANYhoo - dark & storm nights are the best. I would read ...
1) The Collected Ghost Stories of E.F. Benson , until I fell asleep all snug and semi-scared
2) The Egg and I by Betty MacDonald because it's such a cozy, old-fashioned vintage book that washes the creepy crawlies away lol
Now, if I was REALLY brave (not)(ever) - I would read IT by Stephen King which everyone loves but I was too much of a coward to finish :P
ps - I am also a happy follower in Google
Mary great comment and lovely to meet a follower. Gld you are happy. :)
Hey,
If I had to choose something for a dark and stormy night I would choose "Touch the Dark" by Karen Chance. It has enough dark elements to keep me spooked but a nice wippy humor to make me laugh. And I would probably follow that up with "On the Edge" by Ilona Andrews since I love books in which the female main character is smart, savy and can hold her own against what ever is coming.
Thanks!~
I've been meaning to get around to starting both of these series, so this is a fantastic contest for me to enter.
The first thing that comes to mind when I hear "a dark and stormy night" is the Bulwer-Lytton contest. At one point I came across a collection (sadly now out of print) called Dark and Stormy Rides Again which gathered together the "best" of the contest--at least as of 1996. I do believe that would be an appropriate selection to have on a dark and stormy night; a bit of levity and bad puns to scare the monsters away.
I am such a wuss that I wouldn't want to read anything scary. I would probably read one of the Harry Potter books.

I have been wanting to get started on the Wheel of Time series!
What a great contest and the question definitely had me thinking about the answers..
On a dark and stormy night I would probably read, Area 51 by Robert Doherty or Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.
On a beautiful fall afternoon, like right now here in sunny Phoenix, Arizona, I would read, Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury! I know I didn't have to answer that, but I added it because I am looking out at my patio and the gorgeous sky!
I am glad TOR posted this on Twitter! I now have another blogger to follow!

Hmm, on a dark and stormy night, I'd probably go with something humorous - like one of the Vlad Taltos books by Steven Brust. Those are never off my re-read list. :)
In the dark and stormy nights, I always tend to get out my copy of "Lord of the Rings".
No other book can really take me away as the descriptive writing of Tolkien. You can sit in a dark corner of the world (Norway) in the middle of the winter and feel like you are in a sunny meadow.
I think I'd have to have S. King's IT - I don't think anything non verbal has scared me so much.
If I was too freaked out by the dark n scary and had to go for the happy stuff, it would be a re-read of Bambi by F. Salten, a trip down that childhood memory lane would only bring on cheeriness.
Wow...just read some comments- guess IT was scary for more than me.
I will admit, I am a lover not a fighter and I don't read spooky novel on Dark Chilly nights -
My dark night read -would be Mckenzie Mountain - Linda Howard or
Queen of the Orcs Trilogy - Morgan Howell..

I would have my nose buried in Steven Erickson's Midnight Tides. It's massive enough to keep me occupied until dawn's rosy fingers tickle away those gloomy fall storm clouds!

Anything by Stephen King. The Gunslinger if I had to pick one.

What book I'll have with me on a dark stormy night: a nice vampire novel, i.e., Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon

I own the first three Wheel Of Time books but haven't read Mistborn as I can't find it anywhere and will probably give the extra book to a friend so that they will get into the series as well.
On a dark and stormy night i would choose to read the first of the Sevenwaters Trilogy by Juliet Marillier. It is just a brilliant book. Or maybe The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.
I wouldn't pick anything scary. Sharon Shinn's "Archangel" or something like that probably.
Don't know wich one to prefer.
send me both of them and I'll tell you (afterwards).
Ciao

I'd have the book of H.G. Wells's short stories!
