(image pinched from Channel 4's website) I am starting to think about Christmas (I know I know) and as always I will be buying some people books. I love books and think we should give them at every possible opportunity, the only problem is it's very hard to buy books for people at either extreme. Indulge me while I illustrate:
I read three or four books a week on a good week, one or two on a bad week. I buy a lot of books, I get some sent by publisher
s and I have varied but deeply mood related reading habits. It is very hard to find a book that I will definitely read and don't already have (you can check library thing if you are thinking back catalogue but the newest won't always be on my list). Anyway for me then the answer is as follows. Buy me something beautiful. I already have a copy of the Just so Stories but there is a beautiful, lush illustrated version in the children's section at the moment that I could never justify buying myself but would dearly love. Something like that, then who cares if I read it, I will caress it regularly and read the old paperback.
My Dad is the other extreme. He reads one book a year, the one I buy him for Christmas. This year I cheated and got him Stirling Moss' birthday book, All my Races, signed and gave it to him straight away. He won't read two books (excluding Building Regs) and still has last years book to read. I want to get him a book in keeping with tradition. The answer? An audiobook. The most successful choices int he past have been Jeremy Clarksons World of Cars, the Jackie Stewart autobiography, things like that, so now I am searching for the audio equivalent that he can enjoy in the car.
Finding the right book for people is hard and really I want to buy them something they will actually read. I have started early, to give me time to consider and get it right.
So, will you be buying books for gifts this Christmas? Do you find it as tricky as I do? Do you have recommendations for sure fire chrimbo winners and are you hoping for any yourself this year?
The floor is yours.

All I can say is, having just started watching the first season, I love The Mighty Boosh!
Other than that, I don't typically buy books for people (many reasons behind that) but, if I do, I typically will go for a large deluxe book, either something for a coffee table or something along the lines of what you mentioned.
Yup, coffee table books are great, some really beautiful ones around.
Well, considering I have seven signings in bookstores this month, it's a pretty safe bet that I'll be buying someone a book for Christmas!
For C. Voss and the Mighty Boosh- I love the Old Gregg skit, freakin' awesome. You may also like the IT Crowd or Flight of the Conchords.
Buying books can be EXTREMELY tough, because some people are super picky or just need to be "in a mood" for a genre. So when gettin gthem for people I tend to guess based on my own feel of what they like. Many times I'm right, and only a few times I was off, not just a little, but WAY OFF.
Luckily, I found some that happen to be very widely liked, like the picture book, Pets with Tourettes.
Borders books by my house pretty much tripled their in store book number, and most of it looks fairly terrible. I also saw like 700 copies of Wicked, and 1/6 of the building devoted to the Twilight series. I actually felt my life being siphoned away walking past the area to get to Sci-fi/Fantasy. My chest still hurts a little bit.
Anyway- Best of luck in finding the most appropriate choices in your book buying adventures!
LDW - good luck with the signings
Joshua - all great series and hahaha yes Twilight wants your soul!
I've started buying books for Christmas already. Each book kind of selected to suit the personality of the person on the receiving end of it, so I do not have a sure fire thing since they all have totally different tastes, not to mention totally different views on life! Makes the life of santa a bit interesting, for sure!
More power to your book signings LDW!
I'm kind of on the other end of the spectrum, I get books for most people on my list for the holidays. I started doing that after my family asked me for recommendations so much that I said hey, why don't I keep a few ideas for myself and have my Christmas shopping basically done for me? I agree though, that books can be a tricky gift for someone who doesn't read a lot or wouldn't choose to spend their spare time reading.
Well so far I have bought two audiobooks for christmas and am starting to consider what to get for everyone else.
