The Mermaids Madness - Jim C Hines

I copped out a bit of reviewing the first of Jim C Hines Princess book "The Stepsister Scheme" and pointed you to a number of other reviews, this time I will actually share my thoughts, since they mostly apply to both.

Whether you are more of a fan Hans Christian Anderson and his dark endings or Disney's answer to these Princess' by the end of these books the only version of events that will matter is Hines'. The books though are not a re-imagining of the old stories, though they do present a wonderfully dark and different version of events (a believable one for a start), the stories being told in this series take place after. That is, after Danielle (Cinderella) married the prince, after Snow White defeats her mother, after Sleeping Beauty is woken up (and by far worse things than a kiss) and in the case of The Mermaids Madness picking up events after Lirea (hmm what else do those letters spell) failed to win her prince.

Jim is an excellent writer weaving tales that are enchanting and magical at the same time as being dark and adventurous, his heroines are beautifully balanced and there are internal conflicts playing out within all the main characters. Danielle is trying to balance her compassion with the need to protect her people, Snow wants to improve her magic but fears turning into her mother and Talia, well she has issues but the girls trust each other and trust the Queen so they will work through it together.

I love this series and want more. Soon please.
