So I shall hand you over to our guest:
Writers Reading – When? Where? By Morgan Mandel
With a full time job, husband, dog and writing obsession all vying for pieces of me, it’s not easy to find time to read. I manage anyway. If you follow me around, you might see me with a book open on the dining room table during breakfast, at the cafeteria in Downtown Chicago where I’m eating lunch, on the couch in the living room after work, or even upstairs in the bedroom before calling it a night.
I don’t own large bookcase units or places to put them, so my books are stashed in various spots around the house, like a cabinet in the front hallway which houses books written by author friends, a wooden storage unit halfway up the stairs to the second floor, a wooden bookshelf next to the dog toys, the built-in bookcase in my headboard, plus wherever I happen to put a book down.
Right now, I’m working on a novel about my deaf dog, Rascal, an Amstaff/Dalmatian mix, so after purchasing Adobe Photoshop CS4, I bought Photoshop CS4 for Dummies by Peter Bauer. Sitting next to it on the dining room table is usually Dreamweaver 3 for Dummies by Janine Warner and Paul Vachier, which I found at a library book sale. I’m reading that book to help me decide if I want to spend big bucks on the latest version of the software.
During the past year I discovered I’d stuck The English Detective and the Rookie Agent by Pat White in my hall bookcase without reading it, so I rectified that situation and very much enjoyed the romantic suspense. I also read Talk of the Town by Sherrill Bodine, a contemporary romance about a gossip columnist, and Innocence Unveiled, a historical romance by Blythe Gifford
On the mystery side, I enjoyed Dead On by Robert W. Walker and Russian Roulette by Austin S. Camacho. About a month ago, I rented a kindle from the library and discovered First Family by David Baldacci. I had to return the kindle before finishing the book, and ended up lugging around the huge hard cover edition until I’d finished reading it.
That’s a sample of the books I’ve read or am reading. I won’t mention all the blogs and online posts I wade through, or your eyes might glaze. What about you? When and where do you read?

That's okay, Morgan - my books aren't organized either!
And your dog is deaf? How unique.
My books are mostly on shelves, mostly in the room upstairs but not necessarily in any definable order. More chaos really.
I would love a room with bookshelves lining all the walls, but I don't think that will happen.
I'm just going to have to read the books I have and donate the ones by authors I don't know. That way I can get ready for the digital revolution.
Thanks for inviting me over, Hagelrat. You have a perfectly nice real name, but I won't say it if you won't.

Hahaha. I have no issue with use of my real name, I just needed one that was unique for splashing around the webiverse.
My favorite time and place to read is cozied under the covers in bed right before I go to sleep. (In the summer this will change to an outdoor spot, but for the winter, there is no cozier place.
I actually have a library in my house. An entire room devoted to books! I absolutely love it!
Right now I'm in the middle of the YA "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series. Good stuff.
Hi Debra, in bed is a fab place to read. I made a furry blanket for the sofa so I can get a similar effect.
I have a water bed so it's nice and warm there when I read in the winter, but I don't read there as often as the other places downstairs.

Hey Morgan, thanks so much for mentioning DEAD ON in your post; so glad you liked it. I also loved your Killer Career. So THERE!
Ok, so now I have to add Roberts books to the list? Are you people trying to bankrupt me?
Alex, in the works is a book about my deaf dog, Rascal. We didn't know she was deaf when we got her, but overnight we couldn't give her up. She'd already stolen our hearts.

How nice to be surrounded!
I have 4 books going right now: my carry-around book in my purse (THE SECRET OF THE BRADFORD HOUSE by Albert A. Bell, Jr, which I am supposed to review when I'm done with it); two books on the bedside table (CHASM CITY by Alistair Reynolds, which I am having a very hard time slogging through, and MARGARITA NIGHTS by Phyllis Smallman, also scheduled for review), and my living room book is a manuscript for the Malice Domestic contest. I have three "real bookcases" in my very small house, and losts of places where books end up piled. And I read almost anywhere - not while driving, not in the shower - pretty much anywhere, anytime else.
I've concluded that reading is as much an addiction as writing, although not all that read also write.

I read nonfiction during prep periods when I'm subbing at local high schools--books about current world issues or historical events. At night I crawl under the quilts with Bubba (13-pound Schnorkie--or at least that's our best guess because she has the color of a schnauzer and the hair and personality of a yorkie)and read mysteries and thrillers. There are bookshelves all around the house including two in the bedroom--mine and his (he being my husband and sometimes co-author Mike Nettleton). I'm a Virgo. My bookcase is more organized.
