Cover me confused!

umm folks, are you seeing what i'm seeing?
It's a gorgeous image and all but both these books are about werewolves.
Prey is the second in a series I believe, following on from Maneater, and is on the shelf in my local Waterstones.
I am not sure when the new version of Lonely werewolf girl comes out but it's a great book and I thought the cover was cool. I still prefer the original cover though. More in keeping with the character.
I have to say I am disappointed to see the same image used for two werewolf books (very different I know, but still) knowing that they are likely to spend time on the shelves together.

So here are the previous covers
Maneater and the original
Lonely Werewolf cover.

What do you think folks?

I love Martin's work! I giggled at the covers cause I have been bookmarking a post about the same thing:

When I got my copy of Prey I loved it! But then I also remember the new copy of LWG but I didn't realise it would be the same cover.

However - one is being promoted as upper YA (LWG) whilst Prey is definitely for adults. Thomas Emson's writing is sublime and very growed up - wouldn't want any teen picking it up by accident. But yes, odd that two books can look so similar - but then, there's a history of books with covers who are alike!

WLP I know it happens a lot but it always surprises me when it's such a strong look.

LWG has been in the genre fic section so far so I didn't realise this would be a YA cover, it is lovely but doesn't really feel right for the character.
I have Maneater but haven't read it yet.

I am just sad because it's such a striking cover I really want it to have one book and one identity not be a source of confusion.

That's sad they have almost the same cover! The cover art for a book is so important, and to have one's cover represented on another book...

Alex I know, I get that there are stock covers but it's really a shame in this case.

The problem is - there is no way of knowing which stock photo has been used or by who. So you get duplicate covers, or the same photo appearing on a whole raft of covers in various ways from major publishing houses.

This is where I smile smuggly and say - I don't see that happening with my covers because they were designed specifically for my books from an idea fielded by me.

I know what you mean hon... I find it more and more in the erotic genre than anywhere else...

It does happen with spec fic a few times - I got caught out last year with Cherie Priest - Boneshaker ...

Kate Milford also released a book called The Boneshakker at the same time...

I ended up reading that first - and just because of the similar name I ended up finding a new to me author that I ended up liking alot...

I liked the top covers...

Lets also not forget Patricia Briggs cover (Dos Santos) - I have seen the same cover on a few PN books as well....

Cat - Smug much. ;)
EH- romance and erotic are terrible for it!
I appreciate it is an innate risk for anyone using stock photos.

What can I say? I am actually happy that they do not have similar titles and that would have been the bigger disaster. The cover fiasco might be covered up. As Liz said they would be marketed differently, placed at different shelves, so to the very ordinary unaware reader, this won't even register and after all, publishers tend to think about the masses and not us that might spot the cover similarity.

Harry, which is true if the Martin Millar book is on the YA shelves, but if, as often happens, it ends up back in the adult section they will be on the same shelf, spreading their confusion. It'll be interesting to see.
It wouldn't bother me so much if the original cover for Lonely Werewolf wasn't so cool anyway, why replace it with a stock photo.

Then that is the book store's fault really, but it would be interesting to see.

And is it really a stock photo? I had the idea that they actually hired models for that job or at least for the photos they would use.
