I don't do Weekly Geeks that often, but it's fun, and once in a while there is a nice quick one to join in on."Commenting. It can be a fun way to connect to your readers. It can be the a source of frustration as a blogger. A comment can make your day. A comment can cause an argument. Today let's talk commenting."
Well, I do use word verification and I do delete spam. I try to answer every comment individually on my posts and will join in commenting on the other posts on Un:Bound. I love comments, it's great when people feel they want to respond to your posts, not just read them.
I respond on blog, not by email and I have never had to delete a belligerent commenter so far but would be willing to. My blog my rules folks, if you are abusive to other commenters or the team i may well choose to delete you with no apology. I love getting different views though and a bit of a conversation going. The Ravenous Wednesday posts are always great or comments because the gang all come over and hang out.
Twitter has changed things a little, instead of trying to get to know other bloggers slowly in their comment sections, more of us are chatting on twitter and building friendships there. I still try to comment when I can on other blogs, but I average 250-300 posts in my googlereader so only a fraction of those will get comments.
What's your commenting policy and do you leave comments elsewhere?

I love that phrase- as I think blogs like your gather some opinionated bunch of peole - (which is good) but beyond all that there is still that underlining courtesy that just rules out you taking offense...
And thats what comment is all about - discourse, discussion, even a bust up or two - but all in the spitrit of making blogland a lively happening place...

Agreed, I want people to talk and I don't mind strong disagreement, I just don't like it getting personal. :)
I do leave comments elsewhere as I think it's a nice way to engage with content and the work of the blogger. I also always reply to comments on my blog.
My policy on comments is that as long as they're not abusive or deliberate flaming/trolling I'm happy to let comments stand. So the same as you I guess Hagelrat.
I'm a strong believer in reciprocity as well, if people take the time to comment on my blog posts, I'll try and make time to comment on their blog as well.
I'm new to blogging - just erected my outpost yesterday at loisgresh.blogspot.com and created lanagriffin.blogspot.com on 12-31-09.
Rules on my blogs? Post what you think, engage in debate (puh-lease!), be kind to others.
And oh yes, I'm enjoying the landscape of blogging very much. Maybe too much because I'm not getting enough work done now!
I don't know how to twitter yet.
I'm on Twitter, but just don't comment much there - blogging is where I comment.
I don't use a catchphrase or owner approval, except on posts over a week old. (And that is where I catch 99% of my spam.)
I go through my dashboard usually twice a day, commenting where I can, and visiting friends and favorites. I don't answer individual posts, but will answer several in one swoop.
Never had to delete someone's beligerent comment either!
I comment as often as possible and try to respond to every comment as well. I'm still building my blog and readership and don't want to ignore anyone.
I've had some great discussions, but no arguements. Guess I'm lucky.
Jason - it's a great way of engaging and I always appreciate commenters, it's more reassuring than knowing lots of people look in many ways.
Lois - if you think blogging is a timesuck twitter is a black hole! Come play. ;)
LDW - I moderate on posts over three days old but mostly so I can respond, otherwise i would miss them.
Alex - I love seeing your comments and it's a great way to become involved in your community.
I'm also connecting w/ book bloggers on twitter. I'm pussreboots there. My weekly geeks post is here.
Good stuff on the above comments.
It's a good way to support other bloggers/friends/other. I mean, essentially, it's the equivalent of saying "Hey" when passing people in a hall or on a street.
Or even a disagreement can be a good comment -IF- it doesn't descend into crass talk.
Luckily, I have yet to need to delete any nasty comments, and will only leave "questionable" comments of my own on friends' Facebook pages. HAHA
pussreboots, i shall seek you out on twitter
josh - like a stopnchat? ;)
I float about reading other peoples blogs as time permits, (when I can't be shagged working), depending on the blog, I may or may not comment.
:)
I tend to lurk not really on purpose. I just have hard time writing or even thinking of a good post.
Cat - heehee we distract you and you love us more. ;)
Shannon - there are plenty of places I lurk, there isn't always something to add but thanks for outing yourself to say hi. :P
I'll leave comments on other blogs (obviously!), but I always make sure that I have something to say or add to the discussion when commenting. I don't like it when people comment-spam, so I try not to do it to them.
As for comments on my blog, I use the word verification, but don't have to bother with comment moderation yet, since my blog's new and doesn't have much of a readership yet. Lower readership also means I'm not much on the radar for people spamming me. (Up-side to everything!) I will reply to comments made on my blog, though, if I have something to say. If it's a short reply, I'll just make a new comment. If it's a longer one that may lead to some discussion, I may email instead.
I'm also on Twitter, which has helped me make a few connections.
Tea - commentspam ha I like it. Thing is sometimes I don't have much to add but I just want to let people know I am still visiting and appreciate their work so I am ok with the slightly vague and pointless comments. :)
I too hate it when people get personal. I have had my share of those on my poetry blog.
Weekly Geeks: Commenting
gt - how dreadful especially when you are putting yourself out there like that.
Did I miss your twitter nom? I'll have to go look for 'hagelrat'... My twittering is getting obsessive. Happy Weekly Geeks!
I am probably not as resprical as I ort to be. I probably Should comment more, as I enjoy a comment myself. It means I got people thinking.
Care - i think you found me yes?
Harb - yup, you need to get your ass on here and engage your readers more! ;)
