Happy Ravenous Wednesday, everyone, and welcome to our favorite U.K. website and RR's home away from home, Un:bound! Pull up a chair, pillow, couch, or patch of floor, put in your order for a drink! Specialty of the day is mojitos 'cause I have a hankering for 'em. But don't worry. If you're not a fan of mojitos, I've got you covered.
Today's guest is Trinity Blacio and her post is a particularly interesting and inspirational one to me. I love true stories about people overcoming the odds to accomplish their dreams and this is a great example of someone who has done just that. Trinity joined the Ravenous Romance family with a short story in the Threesomes Anthology and we are very happy to have her on Un:Bound today!
Writing With A Handicap
By Trinity Blacio
Hello my name is Trinity Blacio and I’m an author with Ravenous Romance. Today I’m going to explain what I must go through when I write my stories.
All my life I’ve had problems with school. Don’t get me wrong, there were subjects I loved and could whiz through. Example: reading, history, writing and band. If I was given a book and it held my interest I would have it read in two days tops no matter what the length.
But when it came to rules, grammar, math, and science, forget it! One day I would understand what the teacher said, but the next week it would be gone and I’d flunk the test over such material. Give me story problems, and I’d get lost. To this day I still have problems with grammar rules, which seem to change every time I turn around.
Right now I have about 25 different stories waiting to be written, but they sit on hold because of the editing process and how long it takes me to edit a story. Mind you I’m not complaining. I want to write so I have no choice but to take my time and work around my handicap. What handicap you ask?
Here is a list of things that plague me while I’m writing and editing:
Continuing to misspell words, frequently spells the same word differently in a single piece of writing. (Ha, I never could spell and it doesn’t help when Word doesn’t put in the right usage of the word.)
Trouble summarizing. (Writing a synopsis, uggg!)
Weak memory skills. (Oh, this one is a pain! My friend shows me how to do one thing, and I understand it for that day, but come the next day, I’m doing the same thing again! And I don’t even realize I’ve done it.)
Difficulty adjusting to new settings. (Now imagine how hard this is when trying to write a new fantasy world in my stories.)
Works slowly. (I’ve been slowly editing one story now for over 3 months!)
Either pays too little attention to details or focuses on them too much. (I can write a scene that will take up to four pages, but on another scene two paragraphs!)
Poor grasp of abstract concepts. (Have you ever tried to read the new
Now, combine all this with one story. The characters, the settings, the plots, the telling vs. showing, head jumping and so much more are a little of what every writer deals with. Do you wonder why I even write if I have a handicap? Because the stories are screaming to come out! I love to write and read. If I didn’t do both, I’d go crazy. In a way, writing and reading are my ways to relieve stress, to get away.
So the next time you pick up a book, just think how long it took for that author to write it for your enjoyment. But also know we do this because we love to do it.
I end this with a small true story. During my eleventh grade year, I lived with my father and step-mom in
From the beginning I’ve had people tell me I couldn’t write. Guess what? I’ve done it, I’m still doing it, and I will continue to do it. Never count me out.

This is a great tribute to persistence and courage. Trinity, you are an inspiration to anyone who desires to write. Keep going for it, lady! :-)
Hi, Inara. Love to see you here a day early. Kudos to you and Adele for an always memorable experience.
Lock N' Load ladies!
Hi, Jack! What a pleasure to see you first thing on our RR Wednesday! It's actually Wednesday in the U.K., where this blog is based, so we're only early in the U.S.!
And yeah, I found Trinity's post absolutely inspiring. Writing is hard enough without the learning disabilities - to forge ahead despite them is courageous to the extreme.
Trinity - great post, great inspiration!
Hi, Elle! Nice to see you here!!
Hurrah! And I'm with Jack -- what a great tribute to persistence. Congratulations!
Margery!! Vodka martini?
Trinity, what a wonderful story! Thank you so much for sharing. I fall prey to many of the same issues :) It's nice to hear I'm not alone! You're stories are wonderful and it is good to remember the blood, sweat, and tears that go into them!!
Hi Trinity welcome to Un:Bound, I have a brother who is very severely dyslexic and finally earned his degree the same year I did (6 years older than me) and a brother in law with bad dyspraxia who is earning his degree now and doing much better than I ever did. I am always delighted to hear people dealing with these sorts of issues and getting where they want to be, albeit a longer harder journey.
Dana - Whatever you are making sounds good to me although it's 7:15am here so perhaps just a coffee after all.
Thank you everyone. I will continue my journey. No one will block my path to see my stories out there entertaining people.
Trinity
HI! I'm new to the Ravenous world, just had a story accepted for the once upon a time threesome anthology. Not sure of the title at the moment, it's still early. Anyway, found this blog by accident. I wanted to write more for Ravenous, and thought reading other Ravenous menage books would be the first step...then it was googling the authors and I found Dana and through her blog, this site.
But enough about that. I love mojitos! I'll take one, please. Trinity, what a great post! Very courageous and inspiring. Thanks for reminding me that you can persevere despite your disabilities.
Wow, everyone's up early! Or late depending i suppose. Mojitos? Very tastey, I'll take one before reverting to my normal G&T. (Do mojitos go with scones? I'm in the mood for a nice treacle if you have one.) Thanks, Dana!
Trinity, what a fantastic and inspiring post. Just goes to show, you should never judge anyone by their disabilities.
Morning -- can I get a bellini to open my eyes? A wonderful post, as my pal CMK said last night (I think, we were swilling some red wine back then). I get so impatient with people who say they want to write but come up with endless excuses about why they can't.
Short answer: you don't write because you don't want it badly enough.
First day of creative writing classes, I always give them a little presentation on the difference between a writer and a dilettante. Most of them will end up being dilettantes, but it's so wonderful to see those who embrace the writing life for real. Wonderful work we do :-D
[word verification: manto -- sounds like the sequel to MANOS: HANDS OF FATE!]
I apologize that I can only check in a little today as I have the third to the last day of teaching (hurrah!), faculty meeting where I have to present the women's and gender studies certificate for approval (ay yi yi) and then the reception for the undergraduate research journal (ye gods, let there be drinks!).
But I have a question for Trinity: could you talk a bit about your promotional efforts? You seem to be one of the most active people in PR.
Promotion is a hard one. I've been banned on a few groups because I have a habit of forgetting when and how to post. I guess my advice would to be organized! Watch the groups on yahoo, poke in and say hi. Learn their rules and keep them on hand, maybe in a folder by you.
Myspace: many say that they have no luck here, but I disagree. It all depends on how active you are on it. I have over 2000 friends on Myspace and they are from all over. Musicians, Actors, and so on. Don't just friend authors friend everyone.
The same with Facebook look for different people. I play mafia wars and joined many groups with over 60,000 people on it. If I can get just one person to look at my site than great! He or she will spread the word.
Also keep track of 1 Romance ebook, Fiction wise, Amazon, All Romance. The more you know the better.
Biggest advice always be nice even when you know that the same people who criticize you behind your back. You are above that let them say what they will.
I know there are many out there saying I'm just making up my disability. I ignore this because I can't prove to everyone what I go through.
I hope this helps some.
Trinity
I think many writers can relate to the things you list about yourself. I'm one for sure.
Congratulations Trinty for not letting anything stand in your way of succeeding. I battle Fibromyalgia everyday when I write. Sometime I just whiz through my work without a problem, but sometimes I notice that I miss-spell simple words. Thank God for spellcheckers and very understanding editors. Keep the faith.
Whoo hoo! Good morning, everyone! I hope you know I'm here even when I"m not typing - how else would all those mojitos, coffees,G&Ts, bellinis and other tasty treats get dispensed?
It's lovely to see new faces here too! Welcome, Margaret, Imari, and Kristabel, and thanks so much for coming by to support Trinity.
Kristabel, welcome to the world of Ravenous Romance! When are YOU gonna write me a post for
Trinity, I so agree with being nice even if you know other people aren't being so courteous. It takes a lot to get me to lose my temper and actually show it. And even when I do, I try to stay courteous because...well, for one thing, that's what my mom taught me to do and it also feels right. Be cruel to an animal or someone I care about... that's when I stop trying.
Dana yup, totally agree, short of those two things, polite in person and then go kick stuff when no ne can see. :)
Unless you teach English, I think we all suffer to some degree with the same failings.
I can totally relate about the 'you can't do it'. Tell me I can't and I'll show you someone who can.
Good for you.
Another thing about being being polite, you can turn a situation/person around who is not your biggest fan by being unfailingly nice. Not fake, but just staying calm and polite. I got in a discussion with someone who did not like one of my books very much and she ended up having me as a guest on her blog and promoting another one of my books that she DID like. And she's a really cool person too! And that wouldn't have happened if I'd gotten all bent out of shape by the review.
Patricia, welcome to Un:Bound and thank you so much for joining us!
Trinity - how wonderful about your short story sale!
WTG THAT'S FLIPPIN AWESOME
Lana can't get all soft in here and talk about kindness and generosity (although that =OTHER= LG writer is beating on Lana to add that you are indeed a wonderful inspiration).
Lana's gone say it again in her own way:
ATTA GIRL, BABYCAKES! SMOOCH SMOOCH FLIPPIN AWESOME, SWEET THING!
and now Lana's gonna offer up a toast to Trinity's RR sale...
Dana, make mine a bottle of rum.
{{ CLINK CLINK }}
To Trinity!
I'm back! Got to bed rather late last nightand slept later than usual. Sorry I've missed most of the day already. (Drat! That's what comes from living in thr former colonies!!)
Anywho, here I am and will stay as long as everyone else does.
I think I'll try a mojito pleae, Dana. The sun's over the yardarm somewhere and i want to indulge.
I'm totally impressed by our guest today. Also I'm happy to meet others who believe in encouraging dreamers. LOL. :-)
We are all dreamers here Jack. :)
Welcome to all who are new to Un:bound, please play by the rules. The rules are: play, relax, enjoy. :p
Write a post? Um ok. On what, remember, new here! I'll have to see how this all works lol.
I like your thoughts on promotion. Haven't got round to that yet but will keep your suggestions in mind!
Inspiring story, Trinity. Unswerving perseverance does pay off. Well done!
Mojito and bottle of rum, coming up! I love being a hostess. :-)
Kristabel, email me at Zhadi@aol.com and we can discuss this here post I speak of. :-) Dangling participle!
Bravo Trinity! Just keep remembering that your attitude makes you a giant amongst pygmies.
I'm looking forward to the day when your work will reach a greater audience. That will be a day to sing about.
And I will be one of the chorus.
Trinity, Jack is a fabulous fan, reader and friend to have!
Oh my mom taught me to be polite, but in that scarastic politness way. I don't think she realized it until it was far, far too late to change the way I spoke with people who made me angry.
And welcome to everyone! I don't recognize a couple names here, but I raise my newly refilled G&T (thanks, Dana!) to everyone!
Trinity, I agree about the yahoo groups and promoing there, but it's hard to remember which days and after a while it feels like it's ONLY promo on those loops. I like promo but I prefer chatting. Get a sense of other authorsnot just what they're selling.
It's so beautiful here. The sun is shining and its quiet at least until the munchkins come home. Thank you everyone. Jack it's nice to meet you and thank you for the encouraging words it just added to the sunshine. I'll take a diet pepsi please!
Oh and who had to bring up the Dangling participle god I hate those! Dana it was you!!!
Just had to remind me I have chapter four to edit of my new Jinn series I'm working on! Man now I'm going to miss the sun!:(
Thanks again this has been fun.
Trinity
Te salud! to you as well, Isabel.
Sometimes sarcasm is necessary. Some people simply will not take a gentle hint. That's when you need to use the equivalent of the old steam train "cow catcher" and move the offender out of your way. Hopefuly you don't have to do this often.
Hope you won't miss too much sun Trinity. You two seem made for each other.
I will be waiting eagerly for JINN --even without the chaser.
;-)
One Diet Pepsi for Trinity! And sorry about that dangling participle thingeee.. :-)
Isabel, I did a spit take over your typo: Get a sense of other authorsnot
Authorsnot. Author snot. hee hee... Some authors can be very snotty indeed. They don't visit us here, though. Yes, I'm easily amused!
I come from a fine heritage of sarcasm on my mom's side and my dad's side. Lots of sarcastic Norwegians and German/French women. I had to learn to table it 'cause Oooh, did I get myself in trouble...
But yeah, I absolutely agree re: chat versus promotion. I am much more inclined to buy something from an author after reading an interesting post/seeing their personality a bit than I am just seeing a promo and excerpt.
I am, btw, holding off on my own imbibing as I have to go get a root canal (no joke) in two hours. Then I'll be back with a HUGE glass of wine in hand!!!!
Snotty authors and snotty fans: I've met some of both, though most of the authors and fans are very nice indeed. The others' remarks can be dismissed if one just considers the source.
Dana, you and Trinity and Kate, Margery and all who blog here are among the nicest in the world. And I thank all of you for your work and for allowing me to play along twice a month. LOL.
Jack, it wouldn't be a Ravenous Wednesday without you here!
Btw, one of my favorite RR authors, Angela Cameron, is blogging over at Lana's place! Please stop by and give her some love and maybe win a copy of one of her books!
http://lanagriffin.blogspot.com/2010/04/werewolves-vs-vampires-with-angela.html
Oh Dana! You have my sympathy and support. Sorry i can't do more than send good thoughts (and prayers) your way.
I do hope it isn't too painful and that you will be back to enjoy yourself.
LOL.
Two words, Jack: Nitrous Oxide.
Whoo hoo!!!!
Of course, afterwards it'll hurt like hell, but that's what wine is for. :-)
Wow, Trinity - you go, baby! Your post really knocked me out. Keep it up! And I so feel your pain on that need to get the story out once it starts kicking around in your head...
xoxo
-Kilt
HAHA! I usually read over my posts before hitting submit. Totally missed that one. Ah well take it as Freudian if you will. I'm neither confirming nor denying.
As for purchasing an author's work exactly! I'd rather get a sense of him/her, see what their post is like, what their answers are like, not just promo post after promo post.
So what else is out there besides blogging until you're blind?
(Word verification guelat... thought it said gulag at first!)
As for BUYING and READING books -- I don't care about the author's personality. If the books are good, I'll buy and read them.
Just thinking about the publishing biz is giving me ulcers.
Pass the Pepto Bismol!
If I really don't like an author, I won't buy their work if it's a first time read. It takes a lot to make me NOT like someone... but it can be done. If I am totally unfamiliar, say, with two new authors and one of them has really funny/insightful/??? posts/comments and one of them is either lackluster or a bit full of themselves, I will always go for the former's book first.
Pepto Bismol? Sigh. You hurt my bartending instincts, but here ya go...
I'll usually gamble on an author if the book itself reaches out to me. So far the track record has been pretty successful.
Otherwise if authors disappoints me I'll drop them from further consideration. (Case in point; I enjoyed Laurell K. Hamilton's first three books. Then she hared off into soap opera hell. I've read some of her later work but just can't get into it as I used. Sigh...I do wish she would get out of the rut and start writing good thrillers as before. Too much to hope for, I guess.)
Jack, LKH needs to stop writing multi chapter scenes with her characters RUTTING in order to get out of her rut. She manages to bore me with sex scenes. Wow.
Ah me... the bar and snackage are open to grazing - I'm off to the dentist now! Please continue, my children... :-)
I can't stay today, but I thought I'd stop by and say hello. Wonderful post, Trinity, very inspiring. Kudos!
Lisa! Thank you for even the brief hit and run. It's always lovely to have you here!
And NOW off to the dentist!
I have a column to write, so I feel like I should open a bottle of scotch to do so. The bar can handle that, right? Lagavulin? Thank you! Can I have a Cary Grant, too :-) Just to get into my Rosalind Russell mode of course!
UnBound is such a welcoming forum. How can anyone not immediately love it? Here's to lovely readers!
Dana, sorry to hear about the root canal, but whoohoo nitrous oxide. I used to work in a chemistry department and *cough* sometimes lab supplies went missing.
Aha!!!
But who could resist the pull of nitrous oxide? Not I surely.
It is the lovely people who write the books for Ravenous Romance (and other publishing firms) who precisely make Unbound such a wonderful place to belong.
Once again, this grateful reader thnks you all.
Trinity,
Thank you for sharing. I admire writers for their stories and the creative process. I am a logical person, not creative.
Boy have you guys been busy. I have super finished. Son is in the tub getting ready for bed. Didn't crap done on my Jinn series fell asleep! Guess I needed it. Now I'm cold and need a hot bath. Maybe tonight when the kids are in bed I'll get it done.
I sent out an email to Ann Wilson asking her if I could use part of her song for the trailer I want to do for the Jinn series so now I have to wait.
I want to use a part of He's a Magic man for the trailer. It's perfect for my series. I'm so excited about it.
Dana I hope you're doing okay with the root thing. Just the words gives me chills. I still can hear my sister screaming when she was 7. She went down our hill on one of those things you crawl under a car with. Well needless to say her face hit the blacktop and her front teeth were knocked good.
So at age 7 she had to have two root canals. I sat in the waiting room and you could hear her screams. I was 9 at the time and I pray I never have to have one, because I won't. They'll have to drag me kicking and screaming.
So make sure you drink lots of wine.
Thanks again everyone.
Trinity
I've had a wonderful timehanging out with you all today. I may have to retire very soon but I'l hang out as long as possible. If I'm not here when Dana returns please give her my best wishes for a peaceful night. Though the mojitos should see to that.
Just in case...I'll see you all next time. :-)
Hi Trin,
I'm rooting for you hun, I have a learning handicap too, but like you I'll be darned if I'm going to let it get the best of me!
Take care and keep writing.
Janice~
Hey, all! Lovely to see you were all going strong while I was under the gas.
Home with wine and vicodin and motrin. OWWW!!!!
Trinity, it was a pleasure to have you as our guest author today!
Oooh!!! I can empathize most strongly. Fortunately the vicodin and motrin ought to help tremendously. The wine,of course, makes things all the more endurable.
I hope you never have to suffer this sort of thing again.
Meanwhile it's great to have you back. It has been a fun night and I don't really want it to end. (Though it will have to soon enough. Just not yet.)
Well, late to the party again, but it's been a jam-packed day. Maybe I can still find a few hors d'oeuvres around and something to top off the scotch. Just back and finally finishing that column. Okay, I mean I will as soon as I post this. For sure this time!
Speaking of writers being jerks -- actually artist in this instance -- I was really crazy about Bernie Wrightson's art and when I had a chance to meet him I was excited to tell him how I was going to use the Frankenstein he'd illustrated in my course the next semester. After my excited babble, all he asked was if I wanted the book signed. Totally deflated -- and I sure as hell did not order his books for my class.
Well, Dana -- hope it all came out all right.
Sorry it had to happen to such a nice and sincere person, Kate. I've been very lucky in the authors I've met, especially Robert Heinlein (a true and gracious gentleman) and Harry Turtledove (as gracious and open to all points of view as well).
Mr. Wrightson had better understand that his behavior will destroy his audience in time.
Just continue to forge ahead and write about what you know best. You'll still have readers when BW is an obscure name in the history of forgotten fantasy artists.
I have seen Clive Barker great seemingly endless lines of fans at signings and he is as sweet and engaged with the last one in line as he is with the first (and he always gives me a hug). Most of the horror writers I know are absolute dolls. We say it's because they get all the evil out on the page. Ramsey Campbell -- who looks soooooo much like my dad -- is also the sweetest person.
Tons of food and drink left, Kate and jack!
PARTY!!!!
I'm all up fot that!
You are always the super hostess Dana. :-)
Woops!!!
Meant to write "I'm all up for that".
Mojitos are powerful stuff tonight.
Hee hee! Well, I have had an extraordinarily long day and now feels like play time. Either that or I am just punchy with fatigue. How're those motrin and wine mixing, Dana?
I'm afraid i must turn in now good friends. Too many mojitos: they're affecting my spelling and concentration. (plus it's way past my usual bedtime.)
Hate to leave such wonderful folks but I will be back in two weeks for the next RR session. And of course I'll keep track of all your blogs during the intervening time.
Good night and keep flying, all of you. LOL.
Now that I've experienced all of that with my first book, I understand completely.
