Ravenous Wednesday with Isabel Roman (both of them!)

A lot of writers who work in different genres have split personalities; different pen-names and personas depending on what they're writing at the moment. For instance, yours truly (that's me!) write under the name of Dana Fredsti for mysteries, horror, and miscellaneous, and under the nom de plume Inara LaVey for erotic romance. Basically my mom knows if it's under Inara, she probably won't want to read it. :-)
And then we have Isabel Roman. You've met Isabel here before. You know her as the talented author of the Dark Desires of the Druids series published by Ravenous Romance (the ones with the absolutely gee-orgeous covers!) and frequent visitor to Un:Bound whether she's the guest author or just visiting to support her fellow Ravenous writers. What you probably didn't know, however, is our lovely Isabel not only writes under a pen name, but is actually two different people! But I'll let Isabel tell you all about it. So settle in with a drink, enjoy the company and welcome to yet another RR Wednesday at Un:Bound!

Who Is Isabel Roman?

I’ve worked very hard on the mysteries for my romantic suspense novels. I’ve worked very hard on many mysteries: including that of my identity. Even Suspense Magazine (pages 16-17), who scoured the internet for clues about me, at first came up empty. And now, on Un:Bound, I’ve decided to unravel that mystery.

When I say I, I mean in the Queen Elizabeth II terms. The Royal We. I am Isabel Roman. And Isabel Roman consists of a We. Several years ago, a partnership developed between Christine Koehler and Marisa Velez where we collectively agreed to be known as Isabel Roman. Isabel for Marisa’s middle name, and Roman as a sexy shortened version of Christine’s grandmother’s maiden name, Romanowski. terms.
Why did we choose a pseudonym? Because we’re a 50/50 collaboration (with the legally binding contract to prove it) and we both wanted to be first. Somehow, over time, we’ve also become one half of the other’s brain.

Many people ask if we work twice as fast, since we’re two people. No. But you’d think we would! But no, we both work on every single scene in every single one of our stories. We’ve just managed to create an odd synergy with each other. It’s our combined voice that creates Isabel Roman—hence the I on everything we do!

So who are you really talking to when Isabel responds? Probably Christine, since she does most of the online stuff. But, since we do talk incessantly, Marisa knows everything that’s going on in Isabel’s world.

So why are we coming out now? Because we wanted our online friends to know the truth. And since we have two Ravenous novels coming out in bookstores this summer, we wanted to stave off the inevitable confusion of “So which one of you is Isabel?”
Honestly, it’s not as hard to write with a co-writer as you think. And there you have it, mystery solved.

Please visit both Isabels at their website!  And now that we've got you here, do you write under more than one name?  Are there more than one of you lurking under the umbrella of a singular pen name?  And if you're a reader, how do you feel when you find out one of your favorite authors write under more than one pen name in totally different genres?

So now we meet the Two Isabel's. The mental synergy you describe sounds like something to be envied. Happy to meet the both of you.
Dana and Adele, Hi! Looks like it will be a great blogging day. It always is when all of you get together. I bet you whipped that WIP into fine shape. (Consarned things, those WIPs! But you can always make 'em sit up and beg.)
;-)

Dana Fredsti said...

jack, you beat me here! Nice to see you... What can I get you to drink!

The WIP is currently whipping me... three great days of writing and then today... just not happening. I think my brain is fried. :-)

Welcome, Isabel! Both of ya!

I'll take a Mango Margarita, if you please. I'm in the mood for Mango tonight.
Authors and their alternate identities are an old story for the SF/Fantasy fan. It never bothered me at all. Both Isabel's sound like delightful people to know.
Sorry to hear the WIP is winning. You will get the better of it: I know you. LOL. :-)

Hi everyone! Christine of Isabel here...the brunette if we're keeping track. If not, forget it and I'll stick with the *I* of Isabel.

G&T, please!

Jack, we do work very well together (wasn't always like that trust me) but now the stories all seem to flow really great back and forth between us.

Wow -- that is the coolest multiple personality I've ever heard of!! I love your books - both of you and so happy to get to know you better!!

Hagelrat said...

Ha Hoodwinked again. I am delighted that you ventured forth on Un:Bound and after so long of talking to Kate and Margery and not realising they were one and the same it's kinda of fun to have it work the other way around.
Best of luck with the books Isabel (you will always be one entitity in my head even if it takes two to create and sustain you). :)

I'm so delighted to hear the tale behind the name(s). Now I look forward to meeting the other half of the pair!

Hello from London, everyone!

It was such fun hanging out with Adele over the weekend! Great time. It's only 9.30 here, so I'll stick with tea for now, but I'm off to the theatre this afternoon for a matinee of Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing which is exciting. Maybe it will take my mind off a certain someone shaving off his beard (nooooooo!).

Isabel Roman said...

Morning everyone! OK, it IS early so I'll take some tea, scones, too, if you have them. :)

Never considered multiple personalities, but yeah. Very apt description. Sometimes it gets a little confusing but at this point, it's all good. Too long writing together, I think!

Dana Fredsti said...

Tea and scones, hot in the pot, fresh out of the oven, assorted jams and Devonshire cream on hand as well!

Kate/Margery, I am in total envy of your U.K. trip!!

Angela Cameron said...

YAY! Glad to "meet" you both. I had no idea. You've done so well with the split personalities. And such a great photo!

Dana Fredsti said...

Hey, Angela! Nice to see ya here! And yeah, isn't it a great picture of the two Isabels?

Jack C. Young said...

I'm back after a brief absence. i believe I would like some tea and scones, replete with Devonshire cream. Thank you, Dana. Orange jam will do nicely as well.
No schizophrenia here, simply two minds in tandem with each other. Isabels. I warmly salute both of you.

Dana Fredsti said...

Jack is back! Oh, and thanks for the World Fantasy Con info...

Jack C. Young said...

You're very welcome. I hope it is profitable to RR and to everyone affiliated with it. The wider the readerwship, the better for everyone. :-)

Dana Fredsti said...

In fact, let me post the link here!

http://www.contextsf.org/WFC/

Folks, this is for a convention in Ohio and for those who write fantasy/paranormal/horror, sounds like a good thing to consider!

Jack C. Young said...

Forgot to mention that we have pre-registered and are looking forward to the convention. Maybe we'll get a chance to meet some of you there.
Of course as a reader and collector I'm going to have a ball in the dealer's room. :-)

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Wow, co-authors AND a pen name! And in multiple genres. I am impressed.

Dana Fredsti said...

Hi, Alex! Welcome to RR Wednesday! Isabels are pretty awesome, aren't they? :-)

cmkempe said...

Dana, *I'm* envious of me ;-) but I am doing some writing including a little scene that involves you, Kilt, and Isabel...

Dana Fredsti said...

Hmm... intriguing, Ms. Kempe! :-)

Jack C. Young said...

Er, would that make it a threesome, or a foursome? ;-)
Sounds like an interesting combination, to say the least.
Sounds cool Margery.

Isabel Roman said...

I had this whole long thing about how I wanted to go to the World Fantasy con and inner geekiness and blogger (because it wasn't my fault!) ate it. Alas, I'm volunteering at NJ Romance Writer's that weekend. Why does it have to be the same weekend! Typical.

What I want to know, CMK dearie, is what you're writing! *G*

Hagelrat said...

well, it's evening here so i'll have something very very alcoholic please, then i shall stagger about groping all the pretty boys.

cmkempe said...

I could definitely use a gin and tonic and it's a CRIME I don't have one at present.

Not to worry, Isabel! It's only a reading that Chastity Flame is attending while trying to find out more about a target.

:-D

Lisa Lane said...

Wow, this post came as a complete surprise! It is nice to meet the two people behind the persona!!!

I love writing synergy. There's not much else like it (okay, maybe sex is better). Tommy and I write well together, and we have considered creating a pen name for "Team Lane," but the writing synergy we have does not compare to that I shared with my twin sister, when we wrote together in our teens. We took turns "in the driver's seat," and the other was always "in shotgun" (we never worked on a scene without the other)--and without much actually said between us, the writing would "happen."

Kudos on all of your work together, you two!

Dana, might I have a traditional margarita with salt? I'm in a margarita mood! ;-)

Dana Fredsti said...

*dispensing drinks left and right*.

AND having a glass of bubbly myself!

Adele, what is the most alcoholic drink you can think of?

Paisley Kirkpatrick said...

How long have we known each other and I didn't know Isabel was two people, Christine. You sneaker!!! :) I have a question - is that your face on the cover of your book? It sure looks like you if it isn't. Very pretty!!! :)

I am a gemini so everyone says I am two people. Guess I should be writing twice as fast then.

Fun to get to know you better.

Dana Fredsti said...

Howdy, Paisley! May I get you a drink? We drink here a lot at Un:Bound... especially on RR Wednesdays. Isabel is having to drink TWICE as much!

Hagelrat said...

Dana - Neat vodka in a cold glass so you don't have to dilute it with ice? Yeah tht'll do I reckon. ;p

Dana Fredsti said...

You got it, Adele! Who loves ya?!

Paisley Kirkpatrick said...

If Isabel is drinking twice as much as us, then I might have to stay sober and watch what happens. :)

A Margarita sounds good...thanks!

Dana Fredsti said...

Heh. Good point, Paisley. But we can always turn on the camcorder... :-)

One margarita! The good kind. With the shot of Grand Marnier in it!

Jack C. Young said...

I think it's time for a zombie. (Love that name!)
Lisa, I would bet that "the Lane Team" would be a winner.Paisley, just because you're a gemini needn't mean you have to write yourself into exhaustion. ;-) All you need to do is write what you know best.
Dana, you are exactly right! These Wednesdays are a huge party with sparkling beverages and even more sparkling personalities. And that's just the beginning of the fun.

Dana Fredsti said...

Everything I know about bartending I learned from RR Wednesday at Un:Bound. :-)

Marisa said...

Hi Everyone!

Marisa side of Isabel here! From time to time it's me online -though most of it is Christine - but she fills me in on everything. And when it's me sometimes I have to figure out what she (Christine) was talking about as Isabel and jump in. It has been quite the juggling feat I'll tell you! And yes, we write most of our blogs together.

It's nice to come out of the shadows - Chris usually has me chained up and throws scraps of pizza at me for words.

Anyway, since you are passing out drinks I'll take some OJ with amaretto please! Thanks!

Jack C. Young said...

Dana, your drink mixing skills are awesome. WOW! No wonder they call it a zombie. 'Course tomorrow I may feel as though I've been headshot but things are really smooothe tonight. (Does the salt in a margarita counteract the mind deadening effect of a zombie? Just askin')

Dana Fredsti said...

Marisa!! Howdy! Your drink wish is my command. Hey, at least she throws you pizza scraps! That's something, right? RIGHT?!

It's a delight to have both of you here!

Jack... salt and sugar are actually gonna help the kicking your butt portion of the hangover. :-)

Jack C. Young said...

In which case I'll have a mango margarita to follow the zombie please. And thanks for the information.
Pizza scraps Marisa? I guess it's better than bread crumbs. Depends on the pizza of course. Christine sounds like a tough task master.
At least she lets you out of the corner once in a while. ;-)

Susan Macatee said...

Hi, Christine and Marissa! You two sure do make a wonderful combination!!
Best of luck with all your stories!!

Dana Fredsti said...

You're living dangerously, Jack! :-) My kinda guy.

HI, Susan! Thanks for joining us here today!

Jack C. Young said...

If you can't live dangerously at least once, what's the point in living?

Dana Fredsti said...

Very true, Mr. Young!

Kristabel Reed said...

Wow! Busy day here! What to drink...I have a slight headache, what'll get rid of that?

Two people, that's really cool. How do you do your writing? I mean does one of you write something then the other edit it? One chapter each?

Dana Fredsti said...

Kristabel, how about a glass of sulfite free wine and several Ibuprofen?

Marisa said...

Well Kristabel;

That question is asked alot!

We both really do everything there is to do with writing - so there is alot of cross pollination.

However, this is how the bulk of it is distributed:

I do most of the plotting(but never let it be said that Christine doesn't scream at me when something is too cliche!). Christine does most of the editing. I write the bulk of the dialogue; while Christine does most of the exposition and we both write prose.

Now, having said that... I write exposition too and Chris writes dialogue too. So it is entirely possible that I'll complete a scene all by my lonesome or Christine will complete a scene all by her lonesome. When that happens we send it back and forth and change things a few times between us.

It has gotten to the point where unless one of us has an explicit memory of actually writing a particular section/scene whathaveyou - neither she nor I can tell who wrote it after awhile.

That's synergy! heh.

Now - what's this mango margarita I've been hearing about?

Dana Fredsti said...

Mango margarita! Right here, madamoiselle...

Marisa said...

Why thank you, Dana!

Were you a royal barkeep at one time? You are mighty good with that mixing!

Yum!

Dana Fredsti said...

I just follow my passions, Marisa... :-) And the hostess gene runs strong within me!

Kilt Kilpatrick said...

HA!!! Isabel Roman is two people! I KNEW it! Now I see why the three of you are never in the same room at the same time...
-Kilt

Kilt Kilpatrick said...

P.S. Wait, Margery is writing WHAT? The mind reels...
-K

Isabel Roman said...

Woah! Lots going on here, lol. Go to work for a little while and look what I miss.

I see Marisa stepped in and answered some questions. But since she's such a light weight that one OJ and amaretto completely did her in; the margarita? She's out.

Kilt, I suspect CMK is adding us into her book as in Chasity is listening to us read. NAME DROPPING! Hey! We're being name dropped! That's really cool. :)

Marisa said...

Kilt:

It's our evil way of confusing the masses! Muhahaha!

::bops Chris::

Isabel Roman said...

Am heading to the bar to watch the flyers game (or will be at 9 when I'm done work). Thanks for stopping by everyone! Any more quesitons for The Isabels?

Kilt Kilpatrick said...

Thanks again for such a cool interview, Isabels! So nice to get a peek behind your alter ego! Just one last question: Are either of you on Facebook under your real names?
-K

Dana Fredsti said...

Thank you so much, both my Isabels, for being our guests today!

Caroline Clemmons said...

My brain is fried, too, but not the fun way. LOL Sitting at the PC too long has done it. I'd love a good margarita about now!
