Ravenous Wednesday

Which is hotter? Vampires or werewolves? I've seen several debates on the subject on various online forums/blogs and while the majority of votes seem to fall in the vamp camp (heh) there are definitely fans of shapeshifters out there and a lot of werewolf love floating around these days.

Personally whether or not one or the other floats my boat depends entirely on the characters and the skill of the author ... and our guest today definitely stands a good chance of winning another vote for the werewolves!

Here to talk about the sexual appeal of werewolves is Ravenous Romance author Vanessa Vaughn. Judging by the excerpt she's very kindly provided us, she's put a lot of thought into the subject. And I expect her readers will do the same and quite happily. So please settle back, have a drink and a snack, and welcome Vanessa to Un:Bound!

The Secret Sexual Appeal Of The Werewolf

Vampires have long been the bad boys of paranormal romance. But werewolves are trending right now. We love the vampires’ ethereal beauty, their refinement, their hypnotic stares. But what is it about werewolves that is making us swoon?

Werewolves are beasts at heart. They’re animals. But that is part of their charm!
Sometimes we long for an Alpha male who is ruled by instinct, someone willing to use their muscles and teeth and claws to claim what they want. Sometimes we prefer a man who is a little feral and dangerous. . .a man who wants to play rough.

Don’t get me wrong. I love a good vampire tale as much as the next girl. Vampires are elegant and beautiful. Their haunting stares make us forget ourselves and give in completely to our darkest desires.

But sometimes I long to read about a man who is a little more raw. And that is where werewolves come in.

Werewolves are controlled by a powerful urge to mate, just as vampires are controlled by a powerful urge for blood. But while the vampire’s urge is symbolic of sex, the werewolf’s urge is sex itself. What the werewolves feel is primal and savage. It is unstoppable.

Where vampires are elegant and pale and sensual, werewolves are all hard muscle and brute force. Both are the ultimate bad boys. Both make us to do kinky twisted things we never thought we would. Both can bite us savagely and make us part of their world. Both can even go too far and kill us.

But only the werewolf is truly transformed by his hunger. Only the werewolf loses all control and utterly forgets himself. That complete loss of control is what sets werewolves apart. For the werewolf, absolutely everything is permitted and nothing is held back. What he wants, he takes.

If that isn’t a recipe for hot sex, I don’t know what is!!!

Check out my new erotic werewolf novel Pack Of Lies. (Available now in ebook. Print edition coming very soon to Amazon!)

Synopsis:

When Jack is attacked by a powerful werewolf one moonlit night, his world is forever changed.
Marcus is that wolf, the strong leader of his pack, who never imagined a mere mortal could ever escape him, much less ever become one of his kind. And yet, as time passes, he can't deny the handsome human is slowly beginning to change. No longer the civilized architect he used to be, Jack feels a new power coalescing inside of him. He barely even recognizes himself as he becomes more sexual, more impulsive, more wild in
every way.
But as the bite transforms him, it also binds he and his attacker together forever. The two share a powerful unbreakable link, no matter how forcefully they may each try to deny it. Marcus is already hiding secrets from the other wolves, and his position as Alpha is threatened. Could Jack be the new ally Marcus needs to set things right, or will their desire for one another draw them away from all they know and alter the course of their lives forever?

Exerpt:

The moon.

That soft sensual glow is always with me. Even when I can’t see the night sky, I feel its dark caress.

As the moon’s phases change, it breathes a coy suggestive whisper in my ear. It presses close, and I feel its fingers brush my skin. That light sparks something inside of me. Something primal. It starts a fever somewhere deep and spreads like slow-burning fire through my limbs.

I can always sense the Change starting. The full moon’s strong hand curls around my throat. I feel its grip tighten like a man’s thick fingers on my neck. When that grip makes me suddenly lightheaded, my pulse quickens, and I sink quietly to my knees. I know I have to give myself over, and I know how impossible it is to resist.

Some humans dream about submission. They crave it, complete with soft tortures and the smooth caress of expensive leather. They want to be bound and made to feel wonderfully, blissfully helpless. They enjoy feeling compelled to give in.

Humans like to play with their toys.

But what do they know about pleasure and pain so naturally intertwined?

When the animal in me takes over, I feel sensations more intense than any whip could offer. My teeth descend to sharp lethal points against my tongue, and I feel the lovely, horrifying ache as bones lengthen and skin is stretched.
But that ache only makes me smile.

In that instant of agony, my instincts wash over me like a hard drug flooding my veins.
Desire takes over—the desire for sex and for the hunt—obscuring all logical thought, all worries, absolutely all guilt. I feel ecstasy as I flex my teeth and claws. I feel a need building urgently and unstoppably between my legs with an intensity that few experience.

So, you see, as the gut-wrenching agony of the Change grips me, so does the all-consuming pleasure.

Perhaps that is why we wolves prefer our hunts so vicious. And our sex so rough.

Great excerpt. Makes me want to get on all fours and howl at the full moon. (On the other hand, the fate of historical lycanthropes such as Peter Stubbe--or Stumpf--DOES give me pause for much thought.)
The werewolf has always been with us as a figure of uncontrolled passions, especially in the novels, The Werewolf Of Paris (Guy Endore) and Invaders From The Dark (Greye La Spina). No doubt about the fact that he is here to stay.
Hi Dana , Adele, and all the good folks at RR. Let's start off with something light this evening: a Mango Margarita sounds perfect. Thanks very much.
And thank you, Vanessa, for your insights and the excerpt.

Don't know what happened to my comment but I fear it has vanished into some limbo of lost remarks.
I loved the excerpt, Vanessa. The werewolf as a symbol of uncontrollable passions has been around for a long time.
That excerpt makes me want to get on all fours and do some howling myself. (On the other hand, the fate of historical lycanthropes such as Peter Stubbe--or Stumpf--DOES give me pause.)
Hi, Dana, Adele, and all the other good folks who gather at these evenings. I think I'd like to star of with a Mango Margarita please.
Thanks very much.
And thank you, Vanessa, for your insights and the very poetic excerpt.

Good morning, all!

Vanessa, your werewolves sound very fun and sexy. I think every woman loves a man who can get a little wild; werewolves (and vampires, my personal favorite) can parallel much of humanity--including the hot, animalistic hunk who is a beast in bed. ;-) Love your excerpt!

cmkempe said...

Count me as a werewolf fan; they're so much more fun than the cool, detached vamps. Then again, I like a man with a little bit of the beast in him :-D

I agree with my esteemed colleague: I like 'em rough and ready! Vanessa, I think you're really onto something with the idea of transformation. That's a bit part of the appeal, too.

Jack, you're ahead of me on the drinking, but I'll join you with a glass as it's nearly three here in London and I have reason to celebrate :-) Yep, Pelzmantel has just been released from Immanion Press. Wahooooooo! And we've got a woman transforming into a fox, so there's even an appropriateness for today's topic.

K. A. Laity said...

Er, "big" part of the appeal!

Dana Fredsti said...

Mango margarita it is, Jack, and good morning, Lisa, Margery and Kate! And Kate, congrats!!! That's wonderful news and I'm uncorking a bottle of 1999 Brutocao Cabernet for the occasion, along with a big old magnum of Grand Dame bubbly!

I love Vanessa's excerpt - talk about a mood builder!

Vanessa Vaughn said...

Thank you so much for the compliments!!! I really appreciate it! (And congratulations, K.A. Laity on your new release!)

If you enjoyed the exerpt, you can read even more (the first 10 pages) for free at the Ravenous Romance website (http://www.ravenousromance.com). The novel starts off with a sizzling hot scene--an orgy at the full moon between members of the wolf pack--so that exerpt is not for the faint of heart! The sex is very rough! But if you like that sort of thing, you will LOVE this novel!

Enjoy!

Thank you Dana. Have you been able to put your foot on the breast of that wily WIP yet? Troublesome buggers aren't they?
I'm not sure which super creature is hotter. Vamps certainly have powers that werewolves don't seem to possess; such as the ability to transform into bats or wolves or rats or simple mist. Werewolves certainly go for the throat of whatever they want but they're also surely plagued by fleas. ;-)

Jack C. Young said...

My manners are simply atrocious this morning. Kate I apologize. The news about Pelzmantel is absolutely wonderful. I'm really looking forward to it.
And good luck on all your future projects. LOL. :-)

Dana Fredsti said...

I think I'm just kind of bored with vampires 'cause they're all over the damn place these days. That being said, I still love reading about them when the book or story is compelling.

I love Patricia Briggs' werewolf series, with heroine Mercy, who is actually a shapeshifter/coyote!

Jack, still wrestling the WIP. I'm perpetually pooped!

Dana Fredsti said...

Oh, and good morning, Vanessa! And thank you for the heads up on the free excerpt on the website! I note you're on the Top 10 list at Ravenous too. :-)

Jack C. Young said...

That is the main problem vamps face these days. Let's hope that doesn't happen to zombies (at least in the near future.) Then where will we turn--flesh eating sidhes?

Dana Fredsti said...

some people are already sick of zombies, Jack, the same why I am of vampires, so let's just hope they ALL stick around 'cause there are always gonna be readers out there who enjoy the flesh-eaters and the sexy flesh biters!

Isabel Roman said...

I'm all about the werewolves now. I read vampire book after vampire book for years until they all ran together and I couldn't tell the difference. Now, I'm all about the werewolves, though I'm afraid that'll soon go the same way.

Zombies? I admit, I've read several stories with zombies as the typical mindless hoard, plus our anthology, but not much else. There's more zombie literature out there? Hmmm....

Hagelrat said...

Hi folks, Vanessa thanks so much for joining us on Un:Bound with a great post.
Dana thanks as always for being our awesome hostess.
Wow, yep, i'm loving the werewolves myself. :)

Dana Fredsti said...

Isabel, my darling! G&T?

There are a lot more novels written about zombies/zombie apocalypse out there now, some good, some bad, some indifferent. I hope when mind is finished, it'll be listed amongst the good! But definitely a different type of monster than either werewolf or vamp!

Adele, what can I do you for?

Isabel Roman said...

Oh, yes, a G&T most definitely! Gonna be one of those days. And some cranberry scones, if you don't mind. In the mood. :)

I think the mythos of the werewolf is really sexy and dark. Zombies? I love me a good apocalypse!

Lisa Lane said...

Could I get a caffe ristretto, Dana?

Kate, HUGE congrats!!!

I agree that vampires have been way overdone these days--and as a huge fan, I have to say that I find all of the weird liberties (and cliches) writers have taken with the genre just a little disturbing. It's hard to watch your favorite monster fade into a mirage of sunlit sparkles and even MORE battles with werewolves (thank you very much for that unnecessary trend, White Wolf Gaming). I'm sure there are werewolf fans out there who are also sick of reading/watching new takes on this "blood feud." The vampire genre definitely needs an infusion of originality, right now. ;-)

Dana, didn't you recently work on a piece with a panther shape-shifter?

Dana Fredsti said...

Drinks/scones! Here ya go!

Yeah, why are werewolves and vampires so pissy at one another? It's gotten SO overdone... One of the reasons I like True Blood is she doesn't go in that direction.

I wrote a piece called FIXATION with a shape shifting shaman and he does shift into a jaguar. I'm wanting to expand it into a book too...

Jack C. Young said...

Werewolves and vampires, after surviving the wars with humans don't need to be fighting each other. Perhaps certain authors want to say something about the intoxication of power; the more you have, the more you want. And if you want to be supreme on the totem pole then you must eliminate any contenders who might (or might not) want the title. (In our own lifetimes, Adolf Hitler and then Joseph Stalin demonstrated that lesson very clearly.)
In the conventional literature, werewolves often have been enslaved by vampire masters (see Stoker's Dracula) so perhaps the enforced reversal of roles in current stories is understandable.
But, yes, I'm sick to death of this scenario as well. Anthony Boucher (The Complete Werewolf) has already shown us where we can go to inject new life into an old icon. All we have to do is follow him. (Also see Jack Williamson's Darker Than You Think.)

Dana Fredsti said...

I personally think the UNDERWORLD series has a lot to answer for too. :-)

Lisa Lane said...

Yeah, UNDERWORLD definitely pitched the idea into the mainstream....

How about another drink? ;-)

Jack C. Young said...

I agree! The best take of vampire society (presuming such creatures were real) is the Forever Knight Series.
I loved it because for the first time somebody got it right!:-)

Dana Fredsti said...

More drinks, absolutely! I'm into the bubbly about now...

Jack, I haven't read Forever Knight!

Lisa Lane said...

FOREVER KNIGHT rocked! I loved that series!!!

Lisa Lane said...

FOREVER KNIGHT was a television series in the early '90s. It really covered the mythos well.

Dana Fredsti said...

How the heck did I miss it?!

Jack C. Young said...

FK was a Canadian TV series which debuted in 1992 and lasted for three seasons. It centered around an 800 year old vampire working as a Canadian policeman to redeem his soul for the lives he had destroyed over the centuries.
It worked splendidly, due to the sterling performances of the cast which included Geraint Wyn Davies as "Nick Knight", John Kapelos as Don Schanke, his red-neck
partner, and Catherine Disher as Natalie, Toronto's Medical Examiner who tries to restore Nick's humanity. It alsoo featured Nigel Bennet as Nick's Vampire Master, Lucien LaCroix, and Deborah Duchene as Jeanette, Nick's dark femme fatale temptress.
All three seasons are available on dvd. Rent the first season and see if you like it. (I'm betting you will.) LOL.

Dana Fredsti said...

Hmm... it sounds similar to Blood Lines, which I think was also Canadian and based on Tanya Huff's books.

Jack C. Young said...

Why don't you give it a try anyway?
And hope you soon kick that %@#*^ WIP..... well, where it does the most good. ;-)

Dana Fredsti said...

Oh, I'll eventually watch it, Jack! Just thinking outloud, as it were... :-)

Isabel Roman said...

Another drink, pretty please.

I remember Forever Knight, and I remember really liking it. That's about all I remember though. I also reamember...give me a moment. Drat, they rerun it all the time on SyFy! Kindred! That's it. Kindred...something based on the RPG. That didn't last long, but it had more to do with the death of the lead than bad storytelling.

Kate, Congrats! I neglected to say that in my earlier posts. I'll be adding that to my pile shortly. :)

I'd start reading vampires again (sheesh, sounds like palm reading doesn't it) with something different. Lisa, your series was great, and Angela Cameron's was, too, but I haven't really found something new that stays new for more than the first couple chapters.

Jack C. Young said...

The last vampire book I really enjoyed was by John Steakley. It was titled: Vampire$ about a team of mercenary hunters hired by the Vatican, no less, to dispose of the problem. (It was ignominiously butchered by the movie starring James Woods.)I have yet to read a vampire novel which thrilled me more.
While we're on that subject. I believe I'd like a Bloody Mary from our superb hostess. And I thank her profusely in advance.

Lisa Lane said...

Thanks, Isabel. ;-)

I wondered why KINDRED: THE EMBRACED only lasted one season. It had started off really well. It was based on the White Wolf RPG, Vampire: the Masquerade.

Isabel Roman said...

Yeah, I read that recently, when SyFy started to rerun Kindred. Apparently the lead, Mark Franco, died in a motorcycle accident either shortly before the last episode was filmed or shortly afterwards. Pity. It was a good series!

There are no werewolf TV series, are there? Or movies with JUST werewolves? I didn't miss anything, did I? HBO or STARZ best get on that, doncha think?

Jack C. Young said...

There ie a remake of the Universal classic, The Wolf man starring Anthony Hopkins and Benicio del Toro as Lawrence Talbot. I haven't seen it yet so I can't say whether its beter than the original movie.
In the 1960's Hammer Films released a version of Guy Endore's classic titled The Curse Of The Werewolf, which was pretty good and starred Oliver reed as the involuntary lycanthrope.
I don't know of any other films which had a big an impact, nor do I know of any TV shows dealing just with werwolves. I agree that somebody should get on the stick. There is gold yet in that ancient monster.
Thanks Isabel. LOL.

Isabel Roman said...

The new Wolfman sucked. I do like the old one, and now that I'm thinking on it, didn't Abbott and Costello do a movie? *G*

Still, there's a rich genre out there just waiting to be exploited. Tell those big Hollywood producers what: I'll sacrifice my werewolf short story, Shadow State (Germany 1934 & Nazis), for production. How's that? And I'm sure Vanessa would love to have Pack of Lies as a major motion picutre. *G*

See? Two right there.

Jack C. Young said...

Thanks for the warning Isabel. I was afraid it might.
Yep Abbot and Costello met the Wolfman, and the Frankenstein Monster, and Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi's final assay in that role),
It was one of their funniest movies, even if it did dig the grave for the three classic monstersI'd love to see that movie, Isabel. But I'm afraid that they institution would butcher it beyond recognition. I wouldn't wish that on any author. I'm just grateful no one has attempted to produce a film of Robert McCammon's Hour Of The Wolf, also about a werewolf inside Hitler's inner circle. (He's really a British agent.)
!934? Hmmmm Now that sets my imagination to working. Has Shadow State seen print yet or is it still an on line work. I think I'm going to love it.;-)

Vanessa Vaughn said...

Dana: You're right! Pack Of Lies is on the top 10 list at Ravenous. Apparently, it had the highest 1st day sales of any new release yet.

Jack: Forever Night is a guilty pleasure of mine, too! A VERY original series! (I also think I read somewhere that actor Nigel Bennet wrote a series of vampire books. Haven't read them, though)

Isabel: You said it! Why is it that movies/tv shows ALWAYS feature vampires with their werewolves? What, they think a storyline with only weres won't sell?

Vanessa Vaughn said...

And I agree. It is VERY hard to find an original take on vampires. The movie LET THE RIGHT ONE IN was fantastic, though!!! Totally original and utterly frightening! I highly recommend it!

Dana Fredsti said...

Hope you all know your virtual hostess was passing out drinks even while I was running home from work and cleaning house!

Drinks all around!

Let the Right One In was an excellent movie and Jack, I TOTALLY agree re: the movie VAMPIRES. Oy...

Lisa Lane said...

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is definitely one of the best vampire films I've ever seen. ;-)

Congrats on the great release day sales numbers, Vanessa!

I can't believe I missed all this discussion of Forever Knight (which I think you'd like, Dana), and Kindred: The Embraced which I adored for Marc Frankel and for a number of other things, too. Impromptu pub crawl with Mr H.

My ex used to sing this song whenever we watched it which was "drinky, bloody, drinky drinky bloody" (guess you had to be there). Pure cheese, but what fun.

cmkempe said...

Is there any supernatural motif that hasn't been run into the ground lately? Vamps, wolves, fairies, demons and angels -- maybe ghosts? But they have a few problems for romance -- unless it's just the sweet variety. Hmmm. I know my pal Stella Price is doing weresnakes, which is a bit of a twist.

Dana Fredsti said...

Kate and Margery, I go to bed and I miss your entrance! Dang!!!

Well, it was lovely having you all here for yet another RR Wednesday...
