Back before Un:Bound found it’s name, when it was just me talking to the void, I stumbled across a review site that published shortish, but superb reviews at an amazing rate for one man. It also turned out our tastes overlapped a fair amount, so it became a great guide for me looking for new things to read even before the rest of the blogosphere sucked me in.
I would strongly recommend Don’s site to anyone looking for a quick guide to the good the bad and the bland of genre fiction and movies.
The point of all that pre amble is of course that I recently received one of Don’s short stories to review, from Bad Moon Books. Wings over Manhattan details a case taken by Fallon, a private detective in New York, that takes a supernatural twist. As it’s a short story I shalln’t tell you any more about the plot for fear of spoilers.
Suffice to say, as a fan of Raymond Chandler, I loved it. I love the tone of a good noir, the language and the characters. The inevitable play off between the damsel in distress and the femme fatale, the lead’s brusque control of the situation (on occasion), the moment when someone gets the better of our hero, all delight me when done well. To see them done so well in a short story, to have all the things I love delivered to me so neatly that I can devour it over a lunch break was an absolute joy.

There will only be one Raymond Chandler, so kudos to all who can successfully imitate the master. That's one of the great delights of Dana's "A Man's Gotta Eat What A Man's Gotta Eat".
Don D'ammassa sounds like a worthy imitator indeed.
Thanks for the recommendation my lovely Adele. Loved the RR Day this week. Until next time. :-D LOL.
Hmm. I will have to check this out. Still trying to figure out what I'm going to read next. If I ever manage to get through the mists of bloody avalon. That thing is huge.
Well yes there is only one Raymond Chandler, but Don does a good job of capturing the things I love about the genre in a short story so it's well worth a look. :)
thanks both.
