Dragons have always appealed to me, but I have an ongoing frustration. It wasn’t
always a frustration, I used to simply accept it. More recently it's bugged me.
Dragons aren’t pets. Too often for my liking they are treated like large domestic
animals, giant scaly cats that breathe fire, puppies with wings and claws. It’s fine,
from time to time, in a good adventure, but where is the raging magnificence of
the beasts? Where is the raw muscular power and the vast destructive force? Isn’t
anybody afraid of dragons any more?
Oh I love the little swamp dragons of Discworld in their ridiculous, accidentally
explosive way, but when there was a proper dragon on the Discworld it was a
monstrous beast, as it should be. It had the whole of Ankh Morpork at it’s mercy.
That’s what I want more of. Dragons that inspire worship and fear, dragons that
devour whole communities for fun and leave cities nothing more than smouldering
ruins, purely for their wry amusement. I want dragons with something a little demonic
about them, pure predatory power.
So with that in mind I offer you The Hageldragon, created by UBVE’s Vincent
Holland-Keen to satisfy my rantings on the subject (and my need for something for
my office wall). It doesn’t have a name or a psychic link to a human and if it found
itself in Pern it would use the native dragons for snack bars. I love it!

Dragon.. Hagel.... which is more scary... Erm Dragon.. Defintely Dragon. You can put the Epee down now! (Runs)
Cough. Seriously, great post! I love the drawing as well. I can see what you mean, dragons are meant to be scary. Recently i've been reading through Naommi Noviks Temeraire series, retelling the Napoleonic Wars with added dragons. They're good fun, but the dragons are fairly tame, even for their massive size. What's interesting is the smarts. Temeraires figure out that he's bigger and smarter then most people which could make this very interesting, very fast.
Enough meandering from me. I'll stop spamming your posts and get back to making some of my own. Princess of Llandover is next, which does include a big, firebreathing dragon briefly. Then the awesome cat of awesome takes over.
Regards to all!
lol, hah, cheek. ;p
Dragon is just gorgeous, i love the thick blood dripping from his teeth. *grin*
Awesome cat of awesome sounds goofd. Of course all cats are awesome cats of awesome. :)
Ooooo. There's a story waiting to be told in that picture.
A story of death and mayhem and the dragon winning I hope. :)
I love badass dragons. It's like the vampire thing. These are not cuddly creatures.
