This will probably be my last written review for a while- I know I've been absent recently but Adele and I have worked out how to work around my uni schedule :D so you'll all be treated to my ugly mug for video reviews soon enough!
Scott Pilgrim has become something of a mini-cult-phenomenon recently, particularly among the students at Worcester uni (partly because a Worcester Graduate worked on the Visual Effects of the film) so I wheedled and moaned until a friend of mine lent me the book series up to book 5.
Yeah I read all 5 in a day.
Went back home for the week and read this book after coming back to Worcester. IT. IS. MENTAL.
Everything I loved about the other books was intensified into one- Scott Pilgrim is basically all about the most chaotic mix of characters possible (complete with mini-introductions) and it reads a lot like a comic version of the Mario games. Complete with extra lives and loot when you defeat an enemy.
The basic plot is that Scott, who after a huge break-up starts dating a high school girl for the simplicity of just holding hands and talking, begins to dream about a girl on roller skates passing through his dreams. He meets the girl, Ramona, and discovers that she's using hyper-space highways or something to work as a delivery girl for amazon. Oh no! turns out she has a LEAGUE of evil ex-boyfriends headed by the mysterious Gideon.
In this book, Scott has defeated almost all of Ramona's exes except for Gideon, when it turns out that the woman who broke his heart, musical superstar Envy Adams is working with him.
I won't go into any spoilers, but personally I found it almost too chaotic. It was enjoyable, and a lot of fun to read, but the last book seemed to fit too much in.
But having said that, I was two ciders down when I read it (how unprofessional!) and it had been a week since I'd read the others, so it's at least partly due to that. The art style is great- a really sweet simple style that's easy to understand and the expressions are just fantastic: all the exuberance I love about manga in general with the charm of my favourite kid's programs.
Anyone fancying a good light read will really enjoy this; Scott Pilgrim never takes itself too seriously and deals with a lot of real-life angst in a brilliantly simplistic way.
Ok, that's me done. See you when I video review the latest Ghost Hunt book (number 11) here's a clue as to what I thought... OMFG <3
